Today in 5th grade we...

- Attended our Lent mass. 

- Learned how adding prefixes and suffixes to words can change the meaning of the root word. 

- Figured out how to properly write zeros in the dividend. 

- Discovered how the moon pulls the tides and what forms a shore.

Today in 5th grade we...

- Finished reading about Sybil Ludington and discussed the similarities and differences between her and Joseph. 

- Explored the different options of how to present the research that has been gathered on their essay outline. Some options include; a power point, a fake facebook page, a brochure, a scrapbook, a poster, a bulletin board, etc. 

- Learned how to divide decimals by powers of 10, and how to divide decimals by a whole number. 

- Found out how the Hans came to power after the Qin dynasty fell in ancient China. 

- Explored how waves moves and what causes it.

Today in 5th grade we... 

- Brainstormed ideas of how to present our final Language projects. 

- Read about how brave Sybil Ludington was during the revolutionary war. 

- Started our unit on Earth's Oceans by labeling the 5 oceans on a map, and discussing the different parts of the ocean floor. 

- Briefly learned how to multiply with powers of ten. We ran out of time before learning how to divide with powers of ten, and will continue that lesson tomorrow.

Field Trip to Shoushan

Grade 4 and 5 had a fantastic field trip to Shoushan and the art museum today! We saw monkeys, visited a garden on the mountain, and drank moutain tea with the view of the ocean in the background.

The students got lots of exercise and spent the entire day outdoors. We had a nice picnic lunch in the sun at the art museum.

I hope everyone had as much fun as I did.

Make sure to eat a healthy, filling dinner and get a good sleep tonight!

- Continued learning about how young adults contributed to the American Revolutionary War.

- Explored how the Qin dynasty rules China during their short time of power. 

- Learned how to divide decimals.

Today in 5th grade we...

- Started organizing our research into an essay organizer. 

- Learned how to check our answers in math to make sure we have come up with something reliable. 

- Started to study the take over of the Qin dynasty in ancient China. 

- Conducted an experiment that helped us understand how paleontologists study fossils in rock layers and determine their age. 

Homework:
Math - Study for Chapter 13 test
Science - Study for Unit 10 test by completing the unit review 
Language - Study for lesson 20 vocabulary test

- Conducted research for our expository essay. 

- Continued reading "We Were There, Too" to learn more about children's involvement in the revolutionary war. 

- Explored how studying fossils can tell the story of how the Earth has changed. 

- Discussed the upcoming science fair. 

- Went gardening, and harvested some vegetables. 

Homework:
Language - Make sure you have enough information to start planning your essay tomorrow. 
Science - Read p. 472 - 475 and fill in the summarizing mass extinctions chart. Complete Brain check p. 477 - 480 (except #3, #7)

- Started reading "We Were There, Too!" and learned how news traveled differently in the 1700s. 

- Explored the Zhou dynasty, and studied the Confucianism, Legalism, and Zaoism  beliefs.

- Learned how to multiply decimals in the tenths, hundredths,  and the thousandths.
