Today in 5th grade we...

- Learned new vocabulary words that relate to agreements and disagreements. 

- Reviewed the key points of summarizing a story. 

- Completed math review for the exam. 

- Finished our cell and human body review.

STUDY FOR EXAMS!!!

I would like the students to focus on studying for Reading, Social Studies and Language. Their Science exam isn't until next Friday, and their Math exam is the following Monday (Oct 5th) so those really shouldn't be the priority this weekend. Good luck!!!

Today in 5th grade we...

- Reviewed the digestion system, and learned more about the endocrine system.

- Wrote book recommendations.

- Practiced using chart in order to guess, and check math problems. 

- Finished our Chapter 2 study guides in order to prepare for our Social Studies exam.

- Learned how our bodies cool down with our internal "cooling system"

Today in 5th grade we...

- Listened to the story "The Emperor's New Clothes" and responded to this piece of literature with an answer, a citation, and an explanation of our chosen citation. 

- Practiced summarizing a story from our Journeys textbook. 

- Learned about the digestion system, and which organs help us rid our bodies of waste. 

Homework:
Science - Read textbook p. 154 - 159. Do p. 163 and 164 # 2 + 4

I realized that the last exam schedule I made doesn't work because I didn't take into account that they must still attend their minor subject during that week. I also would like to plan some time for reviewing the exams and fixing mistakes. Here is an updated version of the exam schedule. Sorry for the mix up.

Today in 5th grade we...

- Practiced writing "best" sentences by using our notebooks as a resource. 

- Started Read to Someone by reading in pairs and summarizing the story together. 

- Learned how to do division when there is a zero in the quotient. 

- Watched a video that summarized everything we have learned about prehistory.

- Wrote our Unit 3: Lessons 1 - 4 quiz

- Explored our many wonders from the wonder wall.

Language - Write 5 "best" sentences WITHOUT dead words or dead verbs

Today in 5th grade we....

- Played some team building games with our houses so that we can make new friends. 

- Learned how to move the actions parts of a sentence to the beginning of a sentence to make interesting, well written sentences. 

- Explored the changes in the beginning of agriculture, and how it shaped human society. 

- Problem solved using divisibility.

Today in 5th grade we...

- Learned new words about amounts, large and small. 

- Read a story that helped us understand how different people can interpret stories differently based on their own knowledge and interests. 

- Explored the divisibility rules of numbers 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 9, and 10. 

- Finished discussing the parts of the body, and how they work together top give us life. 

Homework: 
Language - Vocabulary lesson 5
                 - Fix spelling test mistakes and get it signed
Science - Textbook p. 151 -152
Reading - RRJ: Read for at least 30 minutes and then answer the given question in at least 1 page. 
                 "Would you like to be a character in this story? Why or why not?"
Math - Workbook p. 25 

Exams:
As most of you already know, this year's exam schedule will be set up a little differently. All minor and major subject exams will take place in 1 week (Sept 29th - October 5th), and every day will be a full day of school. Here is a schedule I have set up for the students to make sure they have enough study time, but also have time for breaks to rest their mind. Let me know if you have any input on any changes that need to be made. We will see how this goes Quarter 1, and adjust it if needed for the following quarters.

It feels great to be back in the classroom with my fantastic fifth graders!! 

Today in 5th grade we...

- discussed what happened during classes while I was gone, and I told them stories of my trip back to Canada. 

- problem solved using all four mathematical operations. 

- Finished our Stone Age Pots. 

- Explored bones, how they work, how they are connected, and different types of muscles, and how they work.

Today in 5th grade we...

- Identified the "where" parts of a sentence, and continued to brainstorm action parts of sentences using images. 

- Read the beginning of Interrupted Journey while making mental pictures. Then we rotated through
"Read to Self" and "Work on Writing". This was our first time we tried our Daily 5 stations. This program is progressing well so far! 


- Learned about dominant and recessive traits with Miss Lopez.

*As most of you probably already know, I am leaving for Canada today (currently writing this from the airport). Due to my absence, there will not be blog updates or classdojo updates every day. I have done my best to pre-plan all lessons and homework assignments. I have also made sure that the teachers who are supply teaching for me have everything organized and that the students are kept on track. Please be flexible this week with some of the changes.

Today in 5th grade we...

- Added actions parts to sentences based on graphics. 

- Practiced our peer editing skills. 

- Worked on word problems using our multiplication by two-digit number skills. 

- Pretended we were hunter-gatherers by going outside to find tools in the natural environment, and then using them to create/decorate clay pots. We only got started on this, and will continue tomorrow!

- Learned the steps of mitosis and meiosis, and important facts about cell division.

Reading - Read silently for at least 30 minutes while using our CAFE strategies

Today in 5th grade we...

- We watched as Mr. Hilden announced the student council members during assembly. They are the following: 
         Sean (Gr.7) is President
         Andrew (Gr.5) is Vice President
         Jeffery (Gr.4) is Secretary
         Ethan (Gr.4) is Treasurer
         Ben (Gr.5), Charlie (Gr.6), Kyle (Gr.6), and Sherry (Gr.6) are representatives. 

- Had our first "Work on Writing" session. We used our first two strategies to increase our writing skills and stamina. 
     - Strategy #1: Underline a difficult word and move on.
     - Strategy #2: Use because when responding to questions about the text. 

- Watched a video about early humans and how they migrated around the world. Then we discussed how and why the life of a hunter-gatherer was different. 

- Reviewed and practiced our multiplication skills. 

- Celebrated Gabi's Birthday! Happy Birthday Gabi!!!

Today in 5th grade we...

~ Had our Lesson 2 spelling test. I saw some improvements already. Please remind your child that if they got the spelling wrong they need to rewrite it 3 times. If they got the word wrong based on definition, they need to write the word 3 times and write out the definition. 

~ Had a visit from the fire department, and learned about fire safety through fun activities. 

~ Learned lesson 3 vocabulary. 

~ Worked on problem solving by using our logical reasoning skills.

Also, this past week the 5th graders finished their 1000 piece puzzle. This is something that has consumed their indoor recess time. Great job Grade 5!!!
