Today in 5th grade we...

- Had our literature vocabulary test.

- Learned new words that relate to certainty and uncertainty.

- Completed a Venn Diagram comparing "A Cry in the Wild" and "Hatchet"

- Wrote our multiplying and dividing fractions test.

- Reviewed what we have learned in our Rocks and Minerals unit to prepare for our test next week.

I. Mauryan Empire Unifies India

1. Who was Candragupta Maurya?
A military leader who seized control of northern India in the 320s BC, founding the Mauryan Empire. 

2. What was Candragupta Maurya’s government like?
A network of spies, army of 600,000 soldiers along with many elephants, chariots, heavy taxes

3. How did becoming a Buddhist change Asoka’s behavior?
He worked to improve his people's lives and spread Buddhism

II. Gupta rulers Promote Hinduism

1. What was India like after the fall of the Mauryan Empire?
Divided for about 500 years

2. Who were Candra Gupta I and Candra Gupta II?
1. Founder of the Gupta empire
2. Emperor under whom Gupta society reached it's high point

3. Why did the Gupta rulers support the caste system?
They believed it would make the empire more stable

4. How do you think India would be different today if the Gupta rules had not taken over?
Might be primarily Buddhist

5. What lead to the decline of the Gupta Empire?
The Huns from Central Asia invaded from the northwest; their armies attacked and marched deep into India

SECTION FIVE – Indian Achievements

I. Religious Art

1. What is unusual about the temple at Ajanta?
It was carved out of a mountainside.

2. How did Hindu temples change over time?
At first they were small stone structures with flat roofs, but they became complex structures with huge towers. 

II. Sanskrit Literature

1. Who was Kalidasa?
A brilliant writer of the Gupta period.

2. How is the theme of the Mahadharata different from the theme of the Ramayana?
The Mahadharata is about the struggle between two families, while the Ramayana is about the ideal love and devotion of a married couple. 

III. Scientific Advances

1. What were some operations that Indian surgeons could perform?
Fixing broken bones, treating wounds, removing infected tonsils, reconstructing broken noses, reattaching torn earlobes. 

2. How were the metallurgy and alloys connected?
Creating alloys, or mixtures of two or more metals, was a skill within metallurgy that ancient Indians developed. 

3. Why do you think the concept of zero was so important?
Zero acts as a placeholder. 

4. What were some Indian achievements in astronomy?
They knew of 7 planets, the sun was a star, and that planets revolved around it. 

5. If the Indians didn’t have telescopes, how did they become expert astronomers?
Careful, systematic observation and record-keeping
