Today in 5th grade we...

- Learned new types of figurative language; 'onomatopoeia', 'alliteration', and 'rhyme'. 

- Did Word Work to prepare for our spelling test tomorrow. 

- Learned how to compare and order fractions and decimals. 

- Explored religion, pyramids, and afterlife from ancient Egyptian time. 

- Continued working on our Ancient Egyptian projects.

Math - Workbook p. 62 (study for test tomorrow)

Today in 5th grade we...

- Started reading "Can't You Make Them Behave, King George" about the American Revolution. 

- Learned about the social status of the Ancient Egyptians, and then had time to do research for our projects. 

- Practiced converting decimals into fractions, and vise versa. 

- Read Chapter 6 of Hatchet

Today in 5th grade we...

- Had our lesson 12 spelling test, and explored a whole new set of words from lesson 13

- Learned how to make intelligent guesses about what a word means by using 'context' and then checking our guesses by using a dictionary. 

- Attempted to learned how to use logical reasoning, prime factorization, multiples and factors to solve mathematical word problems. Unfortunately it didn't turn out to be a successful lesson, and many students were left confused, so we will work on this lesson again on Monday. 

- Wrote our unit 6 quiz for science. 

Homework: 
Language - Vocabulary lesson 13 
Reading - Read Works
               - Free read for at least 30 minutes
Social Studies - Come up with, and type up all questions you want to research about your chosen topic
Language Festival - Memorize all lines of the song, and all lines you need to say for the poem 

Extras: 
- As you should already be aware of, next Thursday is our Thanksgiving Mass, Language Festival, and Thanksgiving Day lunch. All family members are invited to all events through out the day. Here is the approximate timing for that day's events: 

Thanksgiving Mass: 8:30 - 9:30 
Break 9:30 - 10:00
Language Festival: 10:00 - 11:30 
Lunch: 11:30 - 12:30

Today in 5th grade we...

- Learned how to find equivalent fractions, change fractions into decimals, and decimals into percentages using our interactive math notebook. 

-  Started working out our ancient Egyptian summative projects (please sign the paper that went home). 

- Reviewed Unit 6 for our test tomorrow. 

- Practiced for Language Festival and Mass.

Today in 5th grade we...

- Did a full run through of our Language Festival presentation on stage. 

- Came up with examples of similes, metaphors, and personifications, and then completed a pop quiz. 

- Completed a science experiment that will show what happens to wet bread, compared to dry bread over the course of 10 days. 

- Started preparing the house gardens for planting.

Today in 5th grade we...

- Recognized and congratulated all of the students who participated in the spelling bee this past weekend!!!!

- Had a discussion about the tragic acts of terror that took place over the last week around the world. 

- Learned about a new project that we will be doing for our Ancient Egyptian unit.

- Learned the different parts of a fraction, how to write improper fractions, and how to write mixed numbers. 

Homework: 
Reading - Write the attached Word Work words in your dictionary and WW notebook 
Language - Write a paragraph using your planner to answer this questions "How does Paulsen's word choice make the reader feel about Brian's experience as he flies the plane, crash lands in the lake, and comes to on the banks of the lake?"

- Continued to learn more about climate change while reading national geographic and using our reading strategies. 

- Completed silent reading and then a reading response. 

- Began working on fractions by making a flip-book that helps us know how to convert fractions into percentages and decimals. 

- Continued working on our language festival costumes.

Today in 5th grade we...

- Read an article from the newest edition of National Geographic about climate change. We then discussed how this is affecting different regions around the world. 

- Completed some Work on Writing activities to prepare for our spelling test tomorrow. 

- Moved from identifying the GCF (greatest common factor) to the LCM (lowest common multiple) when looking at a list of multiples. 

- Learned about which environmental factors helped Ancient Egyptians survive living along the Nile River.

- Experimented with leaves and rubbing alcohol to see how it affects their pigment. 

- Made our Language Festival Day costumes.

- Found examples of imagery in Hatchet in order to see how reading these passages makes us feel. 

- Continued to improve our reading aloud skills through Read to Someone.

- Completed our Unit 5 test in Science 

- Wrote an introduction, a transition, and a conclusion for our Language Festival Presentation.

-Created a slide show to match our song lyrics.
